Chennai District Level Indian Abacus based Math and Skill development Competition 8th Feb. 2023.

Chennai District Level Abacus based Math and Skill development Competition took place at Govt. Girls Hr. Sec. School, Ashok Nagar, Chennai on 8th Feb. 2023. 3200 Government School students participated in the competition. The Competition in Open ground was held at intervals in pin drop silence. Whistle for every batch about 600 students glued to their seats ran their fingers on the Magic slider Abacus at a speed unusually high and writing the answers in the slots provided under each sum. Batch after batch the students walked into the hall assisted by the teachers, volunteers and students of Ashok Nagar school greatly patient not showing the signs weariness.

Earlier in the day, the beautifully decorated dais had on it dignitaries for the occasion. Mr. S Mars, Chief Educational Officer, Chennai District, Department of School Education Chief Guest the occasion inaugurated the competition. Mr. N Basheer Ahamed, Chairman and Managing Director Inventor – Indian Abacus Instrument and Mrs. Tamilarasi, Headmistress, Govt. Girls Hr. Sec. School, Ashok Nagar in the presence of Dr. Md. Nayeemur Rahman, Vice Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Urdu Academy, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Mr. LKS Syed Ahamed, Chairman and Managing Director, LKS gold House and A. Masood Ahmed Khan, President, Image Star graced the occasion.

The other Govt. school teachers and Illam Thedy Kalvi officials and Volunteers were present for the occasion. In total, 600 students of Starters Basic level were divided into 6 batches. Students from Government schools, Corporation Schools (ITK centres) and Urdu Medium schools including special children participated in the Mega competition. In between the batches, the chief examiner was giving instructions to the students and the parents the proceedings from the areas allocated to them. The competition consisted of segregation of students into 3 categories – A1 (Std 2 to 5), A2 (Std 6) and A3 (Std 7, 8 and 9).

Last batch ended at 1.00 PM and the prize categorised based on level one Champion and 1st winner, 2nd winner, 3rd winner, 4th winner, 5th winner and 6th winner Apart from this there were 300 of students who were selected for Near to Winner prizes. Champions, winners and Near to Winner won attractive trophies, Certificate, Medal and Gift. In the middle there were Lucky Draw and given more than 35 gift were given to students for each batch. More than 350 prizes arranged including the Champion of Champion. The competition at the Govt. Girls Hr. Sec. School, Ashok Nagar was a grand Abacus Fete, handled by the organizing committee with more than 125 volunteers in all.

Mr. Basheer Ahamed, CMD., spoke about the Indian Abacus program has taken up one such core segment of arithmetic, that is, basic computation – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, using abacus as a tool, with an objective of developing a remarkable speed computation skill with accuracy which is extremely essential to children.

During the past 8 months about 6500 students from 200 Govt. schools including Illam Thedi Kalvi centres were trained on why , how and when to use Abacus instrument and how it impacts students on Math and Skill development.

Mr. S Mars, Chief Educational Officer, Chennai District, Department of School spoke about the Abacus based Math and skill development program, Abacus method of teaching addition and subtraction concept is more easily understood by the children than the conventional method. Children associated with abacus learning, who are aware of the images have powerful impact on the mind and hence the superiority of abacus training over the conventional training. It lays a strong foundation in understanding the concept. Abacus learning lays a strong academic foundation giving the 3-13 years children very alert and sharp mental abilities, a rare asset which helps to achieve academic excellence.

Dr. Md. Nayeemur Rahman, Vice Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Urdu Academy, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, spoke that I am very glad to stand before you on this day of immense importance to Indian Abacus, Chennai District Level: Abacus based Math and Skill development Competition. Exactly 24 years ago Abacus was born in India and since then Indian Abacus, pioneering their efforts to introduce the new generation tool Indian Abacus instrument for student and tutors and popularize the product and program for the benefit of innumerable children of the world, have been training them at various centres and schools in all corners of the Country / world. It will be a great news to know that today 3200 students are participating in this Competition. I wish all the Students from Government schools, Corporation Schools and Urdu Medium schools including special children participated in the Mega competition.

The event was focused on the recently (May 2022) started Indian Abacus based Math and Skill Development Program Pilot Project for Government School students (Third Time) and teacher training for government schools including Illam Thedy Kalvi Volunteers for Chennai Districts, Tamil Nadu, which had been started to cater to the children of the Government School Students. The objective was emphasised that the program benefits should reach all the children in the state.

The Best school Awards will be announced and the Teachers/ Volunteers winning the positions will be honoured on the stage on the day of prize distribution ceremony will be happening at the Chennai District Level will a grand Abacus Fete. The Best Abacus tutors is also selected and will be honoured on the day of prize distribution ceremony.

Abacus trained Teachers and HMs of Govt. schools were happy too as student attendance and learning outcomes in all subjects improved after instilling interest of using Abacus instrument. Kids started to fearlessly play with numbers.

The Chennai district level event which went on smoothly were well supported by the Mr. S Mars, CEO., Chennai District level and the teachers, Abacus Instructors and well-wishers. The ceremony ended with the National Anthem.

Towards the end, recalling the success of the event, Mr. Basheer Ahmed informed all dignitaries that the positive impact of the programme is soon to be replicated and expanded into other uncovered schools, under Naan Mudhalavan scheme. In this regard he mentioned that a MoU with Tamil Nadu Skills Development Corporation was signed recently.
